App redesign - existing quiz apps

To get a feel for the layout and design of quiz apps in general I decided to download some and analyse them to see what elements I could take away.

QuizUp

To begin with I had to pick 3 subjects from the icons on the open page. As my app will be less entertaining and more informative/educational I opted to pick for the more informative topics. I did this also because I hoped the questions would have answers that were words as opposed to pictures such as icons that would be used in quizzes such as the logo quiz. I wanted to see how the app would display worded answers as my answers would also be in word format. While the overall app design I found a bit crowded due to the many shapes and adverts that were visible, the question and answer format was laid out clearly. The buttons are nearly the width of the screen and considering the answers are only one word they are of a substantial height. The overall colour scheme is black (background) and white (buttons), the buttons turn green when the answer is right and red when the answer is wrong. The design seems to be quite flat, with no shadows behind it which doesn't give it any dimension.

Trivial Pursuit

The design of Trivial Pursuit is more simplistic, using a blue as the background and colours to signify different topics. The buttons to pick the categories, do not have a shadow to them, however they also have a detail on them running along the bottom which makes them appear as if they are 3D, and gives them dimension. The buttons for the categories do not span the width of the screen, instead are shorter, and also feature icons of the topic on them. The actual quiz doesn't feature solid buttons, instead a darker section for each answer and the same for the question section. The bottom of the last screen features icons which navigate the user to different sections of the app.

Quiz planet

Quiz Planet is an app played over Facebook Messenger. Most answers are one word, so the buttons do not span across the screen, instead are placed in a grid. This would not be applicable to my app considering that the answers are likely to be very wordy, so the buttons would need to be quite wide to accommodate the words. The question takes up most of the screen instead.

The problem with analysing these apps however is that they are for entertainment, the quiz is a game as opposed to having educative purposes. This means the designs are quite fun looking as opposed to simple, and traditional/conservative like ISideWith. I need to find a design style that will appeal to younger people as that is my intended audience, so possibly a kind of fun style, but also needs to be simplistic as the app will be largely text based.
