Supermundane (Rob Lowe) has created a series of posters in the run up to the general election this year on June 8th.
Focusing on the Tories, the posters feature a monochrome colour scheme and are composed mainly of type with a few pictoral elements - a half-toned imaged of Theresa May and additional illustrations.
Supermundane initially wanted to avoid posters as he thought social media posts on places such as Instagram and Facebook would reach a younger audience and speak to them more. However he soon realised that he was speaking to people who already thought like him, so his Instagram posts were appreciated by his followers. This was not the reaction he was hoping for as he wanted to help engage more younger people with politics, not reach out to people already involved.
Johan Kugelberg (curator of the May 1968poster show in 2008) said in relation to posters in a interview with Creative Review: “There seems to be evidence here of the making of an ultra-potent antidote to the extremely scary fragmented, cubicled and computer-screened hyper-individualism of today. Your blog won’t change anything. Your Facebook potentially could, but only if you add to it by meeting and communicating face-to-face with people from walks of life very different to yours.”
"I have been thinking for a while now that a return of the printed poster in public common spaces could be a way of breaking out of the social bubbles we all find ourselves." - SupermundaneThe posters would look effective posted on the wall in multiples - the repetition coupled with the bold type enforce the message and act as in your face encouragement to get out and vote.
I am really inspired by the bold, capitalised type and I loved the idea of using quotes and slogans in the pieces. This makes me sure my idea of using a quote from the protest would work perfectly in the political context. To create my poster I would want to use colour in the the prints, the monochrome colour scheme whilst it suits the style I think the addition of a bright colour would help my poster pop. Colour can invoke feelings and emotions, helpful in the heated/controversial world of politics so I will research into colours to see which would be ideal to use.
