For example, the production of one cotton T-shirt requires 2700 litres of water or the equivalent of 3 years of drinking water. This statistic is shocking and made me rethink my shopping habits. I think hard hitting statistics such as these can help others to rethink their wardrobe as well, using the shock factor.
- Cotton is responsible for 2.6% of the global water use
- 17-20% of industrial water pollution is caused by textile dyeing and treatment
- 8000 synthetic chemicals used in treating fabrics
- in 40 years the Aral Sea lost approximately 70% of its volume as a result of diverting water to grow cotton in the desert
- 85% of clothing thrown away in the US ends up in a landfill where it takes a long time to decompose
- Consumers in the United Kingdom have an estimated £30 billion ($46.7 billion) worth of unworn clothes lingering in their closets.
- The Chinese textile industry creates about 3 billion tons of soot each year.
- Nylon manufacture creates nitrous oxide, a greenhouse gas 310 times more potent than carbon dioxide.
I think these statistics and more can be used in conjunction with the pictures in the lookbook. Tailoring the statistics to suit the clothing worn in the photos will allow the reader to connect with the facts more - seeing the difference that they could easily make to the world will make the content resonate more with them.
This will mean I need to formulate content after the photos are taken as it will depend on the clothing people have in their wardrobes.
The issue I am having is displaying the statistics. Merely listing the ways that fashion has an impact on the environment will most likely not have an impact on the reader as they can skip lots of text. This will mean I need to display this information visually using diagrams. I think keeping a small number of diagrams will work the best as I do not want to overwhelm or bore the reader.
