Penguin book: self initiated crit

Cover 1
+ dynamic, exciting cover - grabs viewers attention
+ good colour scheme - invokes feelings of space but in a more subtle/abstract way
+ modern but unique typeface
+ clear and simple and modern design
+ placement works well to frame design
+ colours work well together and stand out against background
+ typeface works well within cover as subtly scientific due to to height and weight, also sans serif avoids traditional approach to science covers
+ spreading across the 2 pages brings the content together and the writing at teh bottom fits nicely
+ the white writing is brighter and more relevant to book topic
+ nice typography

- has similar been done before?
- blurb text need reworking - feels too big and bulky - tracking feels weird, possible too wide?
- full justified text creates some uneven gaps in blurb
- only relates to one section in book
- why these colours?

Cover 2
+ simple and stylish icons/ illustrations convey content of book effectively
+ type (titles) is modern/futuristic, clear and stylish
+ prefer darker colour (the dark blue background)
+ relates to whole book rather than just one aspect
+ more muted colours create a more sophisticated cover & less childish so appeals to older audiences
+ thinner type works more as its more even/balanced
+ visually effective
+ obvious that it is a book on science

- overdone concept?
- blurb text feels awkward to read
- perhaps greater significance should be given to Stephen Hawking's name?
- typeface can be difficult to read at a glance or from afar
- colours do not look purposefully chosen
- not purple/not blue - be more decisive on colour
