Kim Stuart Branding: Brief and meeting

As part of the responsive brief, I have got in touch with Kim, a level 6 photography student who requires branding as part of her PPP module.

Brief

For my self-branding, I would like my online brand to represent both myself and my way of working with fun, bubbly colours but an element of professionalism as mentioned below. Although I am not sure what direction I would like my branding to go in, I am happy to give full creative control over to you in order to create a brand and design we can both be happy with - very open for suggestions. After university, I would like to go into more editorial and beauty photography so would like things to be quite colourful yet clean looking as my work explores lots of colour and detail. With the branding, I would like a logo that can be recognisable online, on Facebook and Instagram on a phone screen, so it stands out no matter what size it is. I currently do have a logo and branding typeface on my website and Facebook page but am open to suggestions to refine or change this.

As part of PPP, I would like to create photo packs of postcards sized images in a creative pack form to send to magazines and agencies to assist with my plan after leaving uni. Alongside this I would also like a creative cv that links by design to the rest of my branding, having a matching element of either colour or logo to make my overall professionalism clear.

Background/considerations

I am a fine art and beauty photographer; I have always had a strong interest in mixed media photography, combining media like stitching and painting onto photographs. This is the theme throughout my work so I would love something that represents this creative side to my work but also comes across professional. Through my personal work, I use a range of subject matter, often exploring themes that are deeper social issues.

Deliverables
A logo/overall branding
Business cards
Creative Cv design
Help with / update my website
Additional promotional material such as photo packs etc

In order to get a better insight into what Kim wants in her personal branding I found out some further details. (Transcribed from emails for myself to refer back to.)

What is the main idea you want to get across with your branding?
I’d like to get across my professionalism in photography- I’ve found a lot of photographers I like keep their branding quite simple- I can add some links/screenshots of these to either this email or Pinterest (if I can work out how). I think this might help us both out! As well as this I’d like to put across my creativity and experimental style- Textures is a big part of my work, each module I do I try and add an element of texture into my work, whether it be stitching or collage, layering etc.

Colour: what kind of colour scheme would you prefer? e.g bright or pastel, light or dark, girly (because of your interest in beauty photography) or neutral (editorial photography) etc. etc.
I’m thinking quite pastel colours, I feel this would be best to demonstrate the beauty element but also the colours I use in my work. I’m naturally not too girly myself so I think we should stay away from pink haha.

Logo: would you like a logotype (just typographic) or with a symbol also? Or would you prefer me to just come up with some ideas of all sorts then we can refine them together? As I make them I will send you a load and you can pick your favourites and I'll refine from there. Eventually, when I have 3/5 resolved logos you can choose your favourite.
I’m quite open to this, I feel a logo would work for my social media accounts, like Instagram but I think just a typographic would look best on my website etc. If you want to have a bit of an experiment with both and see if anything looks good then I’m down for that! I’m quite open to anything so if you want to try something, go for it!

Typeface: I know you want something professional and clean, do you want serif or sans serif typefaces or again would you prefer I just had a play around and show you designs as and when I create them?
Similar to above, I’m cool with you experimenting a bit then we can see what works best! I quite like the kind of handwritten font style- similar to the one on my website -I've noticed a few photographers do this for their websites too- but we can see what looks better!

Kim and I have decided to create a joint Pinterest board where we can both pin ideas and examples of work that we like in order for us to discuss and get on the same wavelength with the direction of the project.

Initial thoughts

Considerations:
colourful
professional
mixed media (painting/stitching)

Using coloured thread could look impressive on cards - whether it be contrasting or against white card. This stitching process is something I need to look into further also - considering materials, type of stitching, handmade/machine stitched as stitching onto paper is harder than fabric. Could I make business cards out of fabric??

In Kim's promotional pack I want to include something original and fun alongside all the standard requirements, to help her stand out and be remembered. Whether this is incorporated into the business card or as another item, Kim has suggested a felt badge of some sort but I want to explore the idea even further.
