Victorian Illustration

Rebus puzzles from the Victorian era use pictures to represent words. The style of the pictures is illustrative - in a style that is synonymous with the period. The rebus pictures are sketchy and real to life. From these puzzles and pictures I was inspired to research Victorian illustrations.

Walter Crane was a Victorian illustrator, specialising in childrens books. His work echoed the art and craft style and was very popular, he was one of the most influential illustrators of the era. I have drawn inspiration from him, in particular, his highly detailed work.

These illustrations above stood out to me as they all seem to be framed. These frames are ornate and highly decorated. The elements all hail from the art and craft style. I could incorporate frames into my own symbols to make the pictograms more relevant to the era I am basing my research on.

I was immediately drawn to his emblem style illustrations. The compact look of the illustrations drawn in a circle shape look detailed and effective.

I am planning to create a series of emblems for my wayfinding system - encompassing the compact detailed style as well as frames - although I think my emblems will be less ornate and not reflective of the art and craft style - I will instead be focusing on the shape and frame elements to Walter Crane's illustrations.
