Internal Collab - shoot brainstorm + planning

After our critique we brainstormed ideas on how to present the genders through objects, for transgender men we wanted to use an object which was obvious for a man, for non-binary an object used by both men and women and for women something often used by women. We found the non-binary section the hardest as we could not use obviously gendered products, but something that both genders would use.

We then paired these items with the three sanitary products; sanitary pads, tampons and a cup to make scenarios where the two are intertwined in stylised design

Emma and I went out and sourced materials for the shoot. We picked up a mens wallet as well as loose yellow powder for setting make up. We also sourced a menstrual cup via amazon. Regarding the backgrounds for the photography, we wanted bright colours that would not be typically gendered. We went to Fred Aldous and looked at the paper selection.

To begin with, we looked at yellow and purple which, alongside black and white are the colours of the non-binary flag. However we felt that the colours were a bit too loud and the purple was too dark. Instead, we decided to go for a bright orange and a bright greeny-blue (the brightness of the colour detracts from the obvious association of blue with the male gender). After debating whether to pair these colours with grey or a neutral colour, we instead decided that the contrast was stronger when paired with a black colour.
