Studio Brief 2 - Typeface part 8 (developing ideas)

By sketching Art Deco inspired letters based on Helvetica letterforms I began to form an idea of the style I wanted to portray in my typeface. Adding excessive decorative elements, extending the height of the letterform and blocking in counters were some unsuccessful experiments I didn't want to expand on further. However some experiments worked better. Adapting bowls into more circular shapes I felt echoed art deco styles more accurately. Altering the width of the stems of some letters as well as lowering stroke weight on bowls and crossbars worked well I feel. Breaking up letterforms added the appearance of extra space, and a wider width to the glyphs - appearing more luxurious. I will continue to develop a typeface in vector form using some of these characteristics.
