Studio Brief 1 - Wayfinding

13/01/17

Sarah Borris

"Most signs systems have the appearance of an objective functional almost scientific construction. However under the surface one can find many subjective motives. Take for example the work of Paul M, design of many sign systems. English should be the dominant language in all international airports. Airports in English speaking countries should only use English in signs, use of a second language would only patronise

Here he shows subjectivity - his opinion

Role of designer - don't make things as easy as possible. aesthetic and conceptual responsibilities."

Experimental Jetset

objective - factual, independent of the person

subjective - opinion/feeling, reliant on individuals interpretation

sign system us basically an interpretation of a space. By suggesting a way from A to B, the sign system shows its selective nature: of all possible ways to go from A to B, the sign system shows only one.

focus on subjective. design a personal sign system - own interpretation of spaces around you. poetic signs, imaginary signs, conflicting sign systems.

Objective v Subjective

Uniform v Varied
Stable v Dynamic
Clarity v Stylized
universal v Particular
