Probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts. They help to restore the natural gut bacteria after illness. In the case of people with IBS, the use of probiotics is recommended due to the disturbed gut bacteria. This can ease the symptoms by improving the digestion of food.
- Decrease bloating
- Decrease flatulence
- Improve overall IBS symptoms
- Normalize the frequency of bowel movements
- Reduce abdominal pain
How They Work
Taking a probiotic supplement, and thereby increasing the number of friendly bacteria within the large intestine, is thought to reduce the symptoms of IBS through some or all of the following effects:
- Eradicating small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO)
- Reducing the number of unfriendly bacteria
- Strengthening the lining of the intestines
- Reducing intestinal permeability (leaky gut)
- Normalizing motility
- Reducing visceral hypersensitivity
- Reducing pain through helpful effects on nerve receptors found in the intestinal lining
The British Dietetic Association recommends that you try a probiotic supplement for a period of four weeks to see if it has any effect on your symptoms. If not, they recommend that you try a different product with a different strain or strains of probiotic bacteria.
Peppermint
Enteric-coated peppermint oil is widely used for irritable bowel syndrome. It is purported to reduce the abdominal pain and bloating of irritable bowel syndrome. Peppermint is considered a carminative herb, which means that it is used to eliminate excess gas in the intestines. - also peppermint tea (but not peppermint gum etc because they contain xylitols which are a high fodmap food).
Buscopan
Anti spasmodic medication taken to relieve abdominal cramping caused by the colon spasming.
