Sway
I have decided to go with 'sway' for the name of my app, sway as in which political party you would sway towards. Sway seems more flexible and relaxed than 'sided' which was the other name I was leaning towards. Also the fact the word is a movement is interesting as if I chose to add animation to the logo, this could be reflected in the animation too.

Logo sketches
One idea for my logo was simply to have a logotype - a simple sans serif typeface which would be animated in some way as the app is open and loading. My initial thoughts involved the logo either sliding onto the page from one direction, or have the text 'sway' from side to side as the app loads.
Developing on this idea I wanted to add something more than just text, something more relatable for youth. 3 head and shoulder figures would be line up horizontally and would be alternating colours between all the political parties colours (blue, green, orange etc). The text could be placed underneath.
I then thought that I wanted a bit more movement in the opening page instead of just alternating colours so I played around with the idea of cutting up a figure into 3 sections, and have these moving around left to right and in alternating patterns, with the text logo alongside. The movement adds a bit of life to the app and entertains while the app is loading. I can then extend this design onto the icon for the app on the mobile phone screen too - using the ideas of head and shoulders/ dissected figure and party colours).
After creating a few mock ups of what the screen could look like I have decided that I will adjust the design a bit more.
Changing the colours to orange blue and red make the figure look less childish, and altering the typeface from Geosans Light to Quicksand suits the feel of the app more. Altering the background of the screen to a dark grey helps the colours of the figure pop as well as making the logotype more clear.
I also experimented with removing the figure and just using the logotype on its own. The open page seemed too plain with white text so I added political party colours to each letter which could move in an animation, as a still the colours here remind me a bit of Google.
Using Photoshop animation I have created a gif to show a possible opening screen - the colours for each letter change across the screen upon opening.
