Research - existing plastic campaigns

Sea Shepherd
Sea Shepherd recently launched a campaign showing sea animals (turtles and seals) suffocating with plastic bags over their heads. This campaign uses shock tactics in order to scare people into realising the impact of their thoughtless actions. By throwing away plastic and polluting the ocean, this is the effect that can happen. The campaign will also provide useful tips on how to reduce plastic use.

A similar campaign was run by Sea Shepherd a year previously but has not been as popular as the recent campaign. More than one million ocean-dwelling non-human animals become stuck in plastic waste each year, causing pain, disability or death. The campaign was formulated for social media, targeting the younger generations in order to instigate a change. It includes a youtube video which portrays sea animals getting stuck in plastic, adding sounds to the video makes it quite upsetting to watch.

Greenpeace: Dead Whale

In the Philippines this 'dead whale' with a mouth full of plastic shocked people, however the whale was made of plastic and placed on the beach to create a reaction, which worked exactly as they intended. The campaign has since won awards.

Surfrider Foundation – What goes in the Ocean goes in you

Some people do not understand the effect that plastic waste and pollution has on them personally. Plastic may destroy marine life which in turn threatens us, including our oxygen most of which comes from marine plants. Plastic is also ingested by fish, which doesn't just damage or kill them, when people eat these fish the plastic in them is also ingested by us as humans. This can cause illness including cancer. This clever campaign showing sushi made out of plastic is a clever representation of the problems we are facing and turns it into a reality for people who may not care about the ocean or consider it a relevant problem to them.
