Secret 7: Song Initial thoughts and research

Help - London Grammar

Black paint on a white canvas arm
Imprints of the words you chose to say

black paint on a white background (arm too obvious)
emboss 'you chose to say' into white paper.

I'm Not Down - The Clash

Lead vocals are sung by Mick Jones, who wrote the song as a response difficult times he had faced, like the assault described in verse 2:

On my own I faced a gang of jeering in strange streets
When my nerves were pumping and I
Fought my fear in, I did not run
I was not done

The first time it was played live, at Notre Dame Hall in July 1979, Stummer introduced it by saying, “I hope no one is contemplating suicide!”

- Could play on the idea of fighting depression and defiance.
- Like skyscrapers rising up: good imagery to work with.

No Surface All Feeling - Manic Street Preachers

The song reflects the pain of losing a friend, Richey (lyricist and guitarist of the band) disappeared and has not been found since.

- All Feeling - use texture as the concept.
- something missing (Richey). could photograph something taken apart and a vital piece being missing.

Damaged - Primal Scream

Love song. Compares being in love to being addicted.
- Play on that idea of addiction.
- Could also create a cover centred around something being damaged. Photograph an item that has been damaged beyond repair

Lover, You Should've Come Over - Jeff Buckley

In this song, he sings about how he's had failed relationships, which was realised after a break up with someone.

Castles Made of Sand - Jimi Hendrix

Biographical song based on Hendrix's childhood. Father struggled with alcoholism and brother was taken away, abusive relationship between parents.
