MESH: Social media (Hannah and Megan)

Our main focus for social media was Instagram, as the way the app is laid out is perfect for our theme. The pictures are already placed into a pre made grid, which made it ideal for us to create our social media section of the project. We needed a countdown to create hype running up to the exhibition, so we though creating numbers by cutting out sections of prints to be featured in exhibitions, and having these spanning the 3x4 grid that Instagram provides, the Numbers would be evident by the addition of the white spaces, and the entire number could be posted at hours throughout that day. The individual images that make up each post will be blurred and when the viewer clicks on the post it will become more and less pixilated (fig.3) as way to hint at what the full print will look like; by doing this it will encourage people to attend the exhibition to view the clear print.

As a way to encourage audience interaction and retain interest during the exhibition, the account will accept photographs sent via Instagram to the #LSMESH hashtag of people’s favourite locations in Leeds/parts of the exhibition and these can then be changed into pixelated images also. This maintains and encourages interaction, making the exhibition feel more inclusive.

The above are stills from a gif created which will act as an online promotional flyer that will be featured on the social media accounts, as well as emailed to individual people along with more information on the event. The gifs show the different postcode ares of Leeds condensed into a square to allow compatibility with Instagram’s square format; Instagram will be the main form of social media. The gif colour scheme references the grey and brick red used throughout the branding as it relates to the architecture around Leeds. The gif features a map of Leeds which then pixilates into individual postcodes; this way it communicates the aspect of Leeds public spaces straight away. The final still of the gif provides information on the event and features the title and hashtag (#LSMESH) is a custom typeface created for this project, along side less important information in Helvetica as it is more legible than the ‘MESH’ type and is used across ordnance survey maps.
