As my way finding system must include some sort of directional cues in order to be able to function.
I first experimented with arrows. By cutting off the tail and just using the head, which is the same height as one of my symbols, the signs fit together more seamlessly. However, the pointed arrow looked odd next to the smooth circle of my pictogram. Instead, I tried using a quarter circle to point the direction. This continued the consistency of the system.
My aim for my entire system was to avoid using text in my system, relying entirely on pictoral cues for the system to work. Because of this I decided not to include the distance from each set of pictograms to the location it was representing. This meant I needed to figure out another way to portray this less obviously.
The solution I came up with was to use 2 quarter circles instead of one.
The first set of cues are placed closer together, whereas the second set are set farther apart. The distance between the cues is representative of the distance. The sets of cues can be placed further and further apart if the system was to expand to include more places, however as my system is contained within the city centre, all locations are 0.1 - 0.2 miles apart.
I think this solution solves the problem well, and I am happy I have not included any text in my way finding system as I think it compliments and follows through on the puzzle aspect of it - in the sense that nothing is entirely obvious and requires brain power to work through.
