Studio Brief 2 - Typeface part 2 (Typeface Specimen research)

A typeface specimen is a way of displaying a typeface. These specimen are often used as a sample, or test run as it were, to see how the characters complement each other and how it looks in use.

Typeface specimen can be provided by type foundries - a company that designs or distributes typefaces. Often in the form of a double sided poster or book, the specimen contain the typeface as a whole, examples of it in use, personality and characteristics of the typeface, and in some cases how it was created.

The book showcasing the typeface Singular was interesting to me as it showed how the typographer had created the letterforms. Using a grid system and overlapping circles, the areas that created the letterform were filled. I liked seeing the development creation of the letterforms as opposed to just the final product.

As opposed to the book, the typeface FS Brabo was laid out in poster format. I liked the use of space in the poster and the interesting way the given information was expressed.

For my typeface I would ideally like to create a type specimen. The premise of a poster excites me most, as I feel I could make the layout eye catching.
On the other hand if I created a book, I could experiment with book binding.
